Traffic accidents in Ciego de Ávila: a concerning trend
The accident in Florencia adds to a worrying series of similar events in Ciego de Ávila over the past few months.
Just a few days earlier, on December 29, four people lost their lives, including two minors, in a serious accident that took place on the Central Highway, in the section connecting the town of Chambas with the locality of Falla, after the Lada they were traveling in collided with a truck. This incident also left several injured and caused distress in the community.
On December 23, a woman lost her life and 11 others were injured after a truck overturned near Chambas. The vehicle, which was transporting passengers under precarious conditions, highlighted once again the risks associated with transportation in the region.
These events occurred following another fatal accident recorded on November 29, when four people died on the road between Ciego de Ávila and Morón, when a tourist taxi collided with the rear tires of a trailer while trying to avoid a dark cart, locally known as "horse spider." Among the victims were two minors, and several survivors sustained serious injuries.
Trucks involved: an alarming trend in the accidents of Ciego de Ávila
A concerning fact that emerges from these four recent accidents in Ciego de Ávila is the involvement of trucks in all of them.
These vehicles, primarily designed for cargo transport, are often used in Cuba to transport passengers, frequently in precarious conditions and without the necessary safety adaptations.
The recurrence of trucks in these incidents highlights a concerning trend that requires immediate attention. The combination of unsuitable vehicles for human transport, the wear of road infrastructure, and the frequent overload of passengers creates a high-risk scenario that endangers the lives of hundreds of Cubans daily.
Traffic accidents in Ciego de Ávila reflect a road safety crisis that affects the entire island. Factors such as the deterioration of roads, vehicle overloading, and the lack of rigorous technical inspections contribute to this issue.
