Son of the musician and composer Gradelio Pérez, he had his first experiences with music in his own home.
He began his musical studies in his hometown, at the Manuel Saumell Conservatory of Music in Cienfuegos, focusing on classical guitar and piano during that time. Later, in 1993, he moved to the capital and continued his training at the National School of Art. Three years later, he obtained a special diploma in intermediate-level Electric Guitar, Classical Guitar, and Orchestra Conducting. In the same year, 1996, he accepted an invitation from Isaac Delgado to collaborate in one of his concerts, marking the start of a musical career that would become both successful and unstoppable. He went on to become the bassist and musical director of the group led by El Chévere de la Salsa. Prior to that, at just 17 years old, he had already been called to sing and play with Irakere.
In 1998, he arrived in Spain where he settled permanently. His work as a bassist alongside Paco de Lucía resulted in the album Cositas buenas and provided Alain with the visibility in Spain that his talent deserved.
He has worked and collaborated with Irakere, Celia Cruz, Los Van Van, Paquito de Rivera, Javier Masó “Caramelo”, Isaac Delgado and his group, Diego “EL Cigala”, Javier Limón, Paco de Lucía, Niño Josele, among others.
In 2002, he received the First SGAE Award for Latin Jazz.
