Cuban musician Alain Pérez shared a short video of his visit this Saturday to percussionist José Luis Quintana Fuentes, known as "Changuito," who was a founder of Los Van Van.
"Changuito" is recovering at the Julito Díaz Hospital in Havana, although the cause of his hospitalization in that health institution was not specified.
"Happy to see that it is recovering without losing the creativity and depth of our most heartfelt drum," Pérez wrote in the description of the video.
“May God continue to strengthen him, and remember that all help is welcome,” Pérez concluded in his message, who invited other musicians and former students to visit “Changuito” in the hospital.
This year, many Cubans mobilized to provide assistance to "Changuito" after the musician Giraldo Piloto requested support for the renowned percussionist, highlighting the poor conditions in which he lives, without even having a refrigerator.
Quintana Fuentes recently lost a leg as a result of gangrene, stemming from a delay in hospitalization in 2022, which was reported multiple times by his children.
Born on January 18, 1948, in Casablanca, Havana, Changuito is considered one of the greatest Cuban percussionists of all time. He received his nickname in 1964 from the pianist, director, and composer Felipe Dulzaides while he was in the pop-rock group Los Armónicos.
In his long career, he was a tenured professor of music at the Higher Institute of Art (ISA) in Cuba. Until his health deteriorated, he frequented the most important educational institutions in the world, including the Modern School of Music in New York and Berklee College of Music in Boston.
