Google and Etecsa sign agreement for higher speed Internet in Cuba

The agreement marks the beginning of a new technological era on the island of Cuba

This article is from 7 years ago

The Cuban Telecommunications Company (Etecsa) and the computer giant Google today ratified the signing of an agreement that will allow the island to access the services of this platform.

The agreement, which had already been agreed on November 23, undoubtedly constitutes a starting point in Cuba's launch towards the search for and access to information and global cutting-edge technologies. In the same way, and indisputably, from this moment on Cuban Internet users will have greater speed in connectivity and therefore, at a macro social level, Cuban companies will also be able to improve the provision of their services.

On the Cuban side, the person in charge of the rubric was Engineer Mayra Arevich, Executive President of Etecsa, and on Google's side, its Executive President Eric Schmidt.

It also emerged that Google is currently setting up a group of servers on the island.

After they are fully functional, the pages and content related to Google (Gmail, YouTube for example) will work up to 10 times faster than the current speed, since "the journey of packets" is eliminated since the servers will store the caches "within the national territory", so the information will be available in just seconds.

The officials did not respond to questions, as some aspects of the document are still under absolute confidentiality, although it is expected that more details about this important agreement will come to light in the coming days.
