Cuban-style breaded steak with breadcrumbs and egg fritters

Preparation Time

50 minutes

Note

A classic dish of Cuban cuisine: finely cut beef steak, breaded to a crisp, accompanied by an onion mojo and irresistible fritters made from the leftover breading. A traditional recipe, simple, flavorful, and waste-free.

Ingredients

For the meat:

  • Prime beef steaks
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying
  • Bread crumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • A splash of milk

For the onion mojo:

  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 2 small onions (or 1 large)
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Salt to taste

For the fried dishes:

  • Leftover breadcrumbs from the breading
  • Leftover egg from the breading

Instructions

The meat

  • Pound the steaks on both sides with a meat mallet until they are thin, but be careful not to break them.
  • Place them on a tray, season with salt and pepper, and add the crushed garlic from the mortar. Let them rest so they can absorb the flavor.
  • Just before breading them, squeeze the juice of 1 or 2 lemons over the meat.
  • Beat the eggs with a splash of milk in a deep dish.
  • Place breadcrumbs on a flat plate.
  • Coat each steak by first dipping it in egg and then pressing it into the breadcrumbs, ensuring it adheres just right, without excess.
  • Fry the steaks in hot oil, one at a time or two at a time, without overlapping, until golden brown.
  • Drain them on absorbent paper.

Onion sauce

  • Slice the onions and thinly slice the garlic.
  • Place them in a deep plate, add the juice of the lemons and a little salt.
  • Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat and pour in the mixture.
  • Cook until the onion is golden.
  • Remove it to a container so the lemon doesn't evaporate.

Breaded fried items with egg

  • Mix the leftover breadcrumbs and egg together until you have a dough.
  • Make small balls with your hands.
  • Fry them in the same oil where you cooked the steaks, until they are golden brown.
  • Drain them on paper towels.

Serve the steaks topped with onion mojo. Accompany them with white rice and breadcrumb and egg fritters as a side dish.
