Puerto Rican salsero Marc Anthony exploded on social media and demanded that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, stopattack the National Football League (NFL) and, instead, “do something” for the people of Puerto Rico, severely hit by two high-intensity hurricanes.
In a brief post published this Monday on Facebook, the singer was outraged by the inaction of the US president regarding the humanitarian crisis that the Puerto Rican people are going through today.
“Mr. President, shut the hell up about the NFL and do something for our needy people in Puerto Rico. “We are also American citizens!” wrote the “La Gozadera” singer.
Marc Anthony, one of the most influential figures in the Hispanic community in the United States, published a video last Thursday asking for support and donations for his island on the fundraising platform UnidosPorPuertoRico.com.
"Over the past few weeks my island has faced the fury of two historic hurricanes, Irma and now Maria, which caused great devastation in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean (…) now Puerto Rico needs your help and I beg everyone to donate to the efforts rescue," said the artist.
Marc Anthony had joined like thisto the clamor of dozens of Latin artists such as Jennifer López, Ricky Martin, Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, Miguel Bosé, Alejandro Sanz, Juanes, Olga Tañón, Rubén Blades, and many others.
On the other hand, President Trump's controversial public statements about the NFL took place after several players in this League began to kneel during the singing of the anthem at games.
The athletes' initiative is a way to draw attention to police brutality against the Afro-descendant community in the United States, as well as the most recent and worrying acts of explicit racism that have occurred in the country, such asthe supremacist march in Charlottesville.
During a speech on Friday in the southern state of Alabama, Trump attacked the players and called them “sons of bitches,” stressing that the league should “fire them” for not respecting the anthem and the flag. The next day,the president launched himself against NBA star Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors.
Curry had shown his reservations about attending an event hosted by Trump at the White House, and the latter used Twitter again to withdraw his invitation and call for a boycott of the NFL, as well as the dismissal orsuspension of players who “disrespect the flag and the country”.
