On the balcony of his house in Old Havana, last night, the independent Cuban artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara began a performance with the Cuban flag despitethe threats of the political police.
The police detained him precisely last Monday for 24 hourswithout giving news of his kidnapping to prevent him from carrying out this performance, considering the balcony of Alcántara's house a public space.
“The performance, does the country contemplate you proudly? From the series: “Se USA” has just begun! 24 hours holding the Cuban flag at a 90° angle, we will see what happens,” Alcántara announced on his Facebook account.
Other independent Cuban and foreign artists are supporting the initiative. Jesús Benítez, a Mexican artist expelled from the country by the Cuban authorities during the Biennial last April, has shared Alcántara's publication to show his support for free art in Cuba.
Otero Alcántara resides at 955 Damas Street, between San Isidro and Avenida del Puerto, Old Havana. The Museum of Dissidence in Cuba is based in his own house, a space that promotes art made outside of Cuban institutions, for which it has been constantly censored.
AlcantaraHe has been detained by the Cuban political police repeatedly for defending free creation and freedom of expression on the Island.
In this sense, he has openly opposed Decree 349, a law that greatly limits artistic production in the country. For example, since the approval of this regulation, artists cannot present their work in private businesses or public spaces without the approval of the Ministry of Culture.
