More than 140 thousand Spanish citizens live in Cuba

Most of them are Cubans who obtained their Spanish nationality thanks to the Historical Memory Law and are registered as residents in Cuba.

The number of citizensSpaniards residing in Cuba continues to rise for another year. The reason has its origin in the well-known Historical Memory Law promoted by the former Spanish president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in 2006.

How many Spanish citizens live in Cuba?

According to official data that can be found on the website of the National Institute of Statistics of Spain, 145,167 Spanish citizens currently live in Cuba.The data compared to the previous year means an increase of 5,316 people.

A law of the Spanish legal system that changed the lives of thousands of Cubans

This is Law 52/2007, of December 26. It recognizes rights, expands existing rights and establishes measures in favor of those who suffered persecution or violence during the civil war and the Franco dictatorship.

It was approved by the Congress of Deputies on October 31, 2007. It opened Pandora's Box of the pains of Franco's regime, but it was the opportunity for thousands of descendants of Spaniards around the world to enter Europe legally.

There are still 60 thousand files of applications for Spanish nationality pending a response in Havana under the protection of the Historical Memory Law.
