The communists return to power in Spain 81 years later

New Spanish government between socialists and communists, supported by nationalists and independence supporters.

This article is from 4 years ago

The candidate of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), Pedro Sánchez, has been elected president of the government in the second vote, after receiving the support of his coalition partners, Unidas Podemos, and pro-independence parties, as well as the abstention of the Catalan nationalists. of ERC and Basques of Bildu, political representation of the terrorist group ETA.

The election of Sánchez as president will imply the return of the communists to the government of Spain, 81 years later; due to the government pact between Unidas Podemos and the PSOE, negotiated in record time, after the electoral failure of the socialist candidate in the elections of November 10, 2019, when he lost three deputies and almost 800 thousand votes.

In 1939, with the defeat of the Republican side in the Civil War, the communists were removed from power by a military junta headed by General Francisco Franco Bahamonde.

Sánchez was elected in a tight vote, with 167 votes in favor, 165 against and 18 abstentions, which predicts a complicated legislature that could end even before the four years provided for by law.

The new president, who failed in his first attempt to be elected, on Sunday, January 5, has received the favorable votes of his party, his ally Unidas Podemos, with whom he will form a government; and from PNV, Más País, Compromís, Nueva Canarias, Teruel Exist and BNG.

The abstentions of the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), 13 deputies, and Bildu, 6 deputies, have been decisive for Sánchez to be elected president of the Spanish government.

Voting against were the Popular Party, VOX and Ciudadanos who - during the investiture debates - have criticized the new president for his pact with communists, independentists and nationalists from different regions of Spain.

Once the new head of the Spanish executive was proclaimed, cries of "Yes, we can" were heard and the leader of Unidas Podemos Pablo Iglesias was seen crying with emotion.
