Nine Cuban baseball players stand out in terms of performance among the almost hundred sons of the Greater Antilles who right now measure their strength in the Minor Leagues.
Five of them perform at the AAA level. They are the cases of Lorenzo Quintana (belonging to the Astros organization), Rangel Ravelo (Dodgers), Yasmany Tomás (Nationals), Vladimir Gutierrez and Alfredo Rodriguez, both from the Reds.
Catcher Quintana, 32, has an offensive line of .450/.500/.450 in four games where he has nine hits in 20 at-bats.
For his part, first baseman Ravelo (who came through the Cardinals' first level in 2019 and 2020) is hitting .333 with three doubles and a home run in five games, and Tomás continues trying to make his return to the MLB, now with the Washington flannel.
Two tubes, a home run and five RBIs are the Tank's calling card today, with an OPS of .919.
As for shortstop Rodríguez, he is 5 for 12 (.417) with a triple and a steal, in addition to 1,172 in the sum of OBP and slugging.
The only pitcher of the aforementioned quintet, the right-hander Gutiérrez, completed a six-inning outing as a starter and was credited with the victory by withstanding only one hit and no runs, with six strikeouts and two walks.
Meanwhile, the first baseman Lazaro Alonso (Marlins) and the shortstop José Israel García (Reds) are making good progress in AA.
The big man from Pinar del Río has a slash line of .400/.609/.467, has six RBIs and eight transfers; while García – who lived the MLB experience last year – is blowing it up with a pair of doubles, an equal number of homers and a connection of three corners, eight RBIs and an OPS of 1.168.
Lastly, the youngsters Victor Mesa Jr. (Marlins) y Lazaro Armenteros (Athletics) are currently shining in Class A.
Mesa is 5-for-16 (.313) and has six scored runs; and Armenteros averages .353 with six singles in 17 official visits.
