Elsa approaches the center of Cuba while it hits the east of the island with its rains and winds

The Tropical storm Elsa approaches the south of central Cuba, while heavy rains and winds hit the eastern half of the island, reported the Institute of Meteorology in its report this Sunday night.

According to the 9 p.m. report, cloudy weather associated with the meteorological phenomenon covers the eastern and central regions and even the province of Matanzas.

Storm feeder bands cause heavy showers and rains over half of the eastern region of the country. In the Cilantro dam, in Pilón, province of Granma, 122 millimeters accumulated in just four hours, while in the town of Cabo Cruz 92 millimeters accumulated in the last six hours.

At nine tonight the center of Elsa was estimated at 20.3 degrees North latitude and 78.9 degrees West longitude, a position that places it about 105 kilometers southeast of Casilda, province of Sancti Spíritus.

In the next 12 to 24 hours, Tropical Storm Elsa will continue heading northwest, with similar translation speed and could gain slightly in organization and intensity before entering land, at a point on the central south coast.

Elsa approaches the south of the central region

The cloudy weather associated with Tropical Storm Elsa covers the eastern and central regions and even the province of Matanzas. Feeding bands are generating heavy showers and rain over the eastern half of the country. At the Cilantro dam, in Pilón, it continued to rain and in just four hours 122 millimeters accumulated. Also in the last six hours, 92 millimeters accumulated in Cabo Cruz, both towns in the province of Granma.

In the southern eastern portion, sustained winds with tropical storm force have been recorded during the afternoon. The Cabo Cruz weather station reported sustained winds of 80 kilometers per hour, with a maximum gust of 98 kilometers per hour.

At nine tonight the center of tropical storm Elsa was estimated at 20.3 degrees North latitude and 78.9 degrees West longitude, a position that places it about 105 kilometers southeast of Casilda, province of Sancti Spíritus.

Elsa maintains its course to the northwest, slightly increasing its travel speed to 24 kilometers per hour, with little change in its intensity. Its maximum sustained winds are 95 kilometers per hour, although its central pressure has decreased to 1005 hectoPascal.

In the next 12 to 24 hours, tropical storm Elsa will continue heading northwest, with a similar speed of movement and could slightly gain in organization and intensity before entering land, at a point on the central south coast. Cloudy weather and rain will continue to affect the eastern half of Cuba and gradually cover the western provinces, being strong and intense, mainly in mountainous locations.

In the eastern region and up to Ciego de Ávila, the winds will blow at speeds between 60 and 75 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts that will reach tropical storm strength of up to 100 kilometers per hour.

Swells will continue in the south of Granma, with light to moderate coastal flooding. In the rest of the southern central and eastern coast there will be storm surges, with slight coastal flooding in the Gulf of Guacanayabo, which will begin at night on the southern coast of the central region of Cuba.

The next tropical cyclone warning will be issued at midnight.
