The former Cuban baseball player Oscar Macías Hernández has been detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) since August of this year for the crime of armed assault, according to the Miami-Dade city website.

The detainee's record shows that, in addition, a bail of $10,000 was set and he was charged with a second-degree felony.

The information, which is publicly accessible, also details that the former Cuban baseball player was placed on probation in April 2020 after spending two years in detention, although the specific crime is not mentioned.

Agustín Márquez, a Facebook user, stated that he spoke with the Cuban's sister, who denied that he was addicted to drugs, as was claimed in a report by the digital site Swing Completo and reproduced by other media outlets.

Márquez stated, "He does not accept that it is said he has not been helped, as he claims to have received a lot of support from his close relatives, but he is now of legal age and in control of his own destiny."

CiberCuba reached out to Márquez to connect with the family of the former baseball player and hear their account of the events. However, he stated that they are not interested in receiving visits from the press. He also added that he was not authorized to provide a phone number to contact them.

Daniel de Malas, CEO of the sports magazine Swing Completo, told our outlet that the intention of the publication was not to create false expectations regarding the case but to offer assistance.

The journalist added that all the published information was obtained from people close to Macías, such as baseball players, friends, and sports reporters, and no one ever mentioned the family.

"The goal was that, to help and learn about a man who contributed greatly to Cuban sports," he noted.

Until now, there had been concern about the whereabouts of Macías Hernández, and social media campaigns had been launched to help locate him, including one by the baseball player René Arocha.

"Someone must know the truth and where he is. We need to find him and help him if he needs it," he said on the social media platform.

Oscar Macías Hernández (Güira de Melena, 1969) played as a second baseman and performed well as a batter. Over the course of 18 National Series, 8 Selective Series, two Revolution Cups, and two Super Leagues, he maintained a batting average of .310, falling just 40 hits short of 2000. He recorded 50 triples, over 300 doubles, and drove in and scored 1000 runs. Defensively, he had an average of .974.

He left Cuba at the age of 34 on a small boat, intending to reach Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States. He had been sanctioned and excluded from the national team that would participate in the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo.
