José Gómez Pinto, "Látigo" Gómez, a legend in sports from Villa Clara, has passed away

José "Látigo" Gómez, former catcher for the Azucareros and a prominent athlete from Villa Clara, passed away this Thursday. His death comes just a day after that of his daughter, Hanny Gómez, a well-known broadcaster in the province.

The radio station MHW La Reina Radial del Centro reported this Thursday the passing of José Gómez Pinto, known as “Látigo” Gómez, who was a catcher for the Azucareros team and a celebrated figure in the sports community of Sagüa and Villa Clara.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family, the Sagüero sports movement, and all those who admire and respect him,” stated the radio station on its Facebook profile.

He also noted that the renowned baseball player was the father of Hanny Gómez Méndez, one of the most respected and beloved voices in state radio in the province, who, in a tragic twist of fate, passed away on Wednesday.

Several people expressed their sorrow on social media over the passing of the renowned baseball player "Látigo" Gómez.

Alfredo García Pimentel noted on Facebook that, upon hearing of the receiver's passing, "Sagua la Grande is still in mourning. We have just confirmed the death of José Gómez Pinto."

Osmany Hernández Ruiz expressed with sorrow: “Yesterday it was Hanny Gómez, today it is his father, my baseball coach, team director, and above all, a dear friend. He could not withstand the blows that life dealt him recently. I feel an immense pain, and I know that many of his friends, who are also mine, feel the same. It is even harder to be far away and unable to be with him in this final moment. My condolences to his sisters and the entire family. Farewell, José Gómez Pinto.”

Recently, the prominent Cuban physician Juan Bautista Mendilahaxon López passed away in Cienfuegos at the age of 74, his family reported.

"A good man has passed away: our father. Juan Bautista Mendilahaxon López, you continue to live on in our memories. One month shy of turning 75," wrote his son Erik Mendilahaxon Pina on Facebook.

Also, a few days ago, Cuban doctor Jorge González Pérez, a renowned specialist in Legal Medicine who led the search for Che Guevara's remains, passed away in Havana at the age of 72.

The Minister of Public Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda, announced the news on his social media without providing details about the cause of death.
