The Cuban American Christi Fraga was elected mayor of Doral, in the second round, obtaining 54.55% of the votes; becoming the first woman to hold office in that city in Miami-Dade County; and leading an independent candidacy.
Fraga was elected councilor of Doral this Tuesday, with a ten-point advantage over Claudia Mariaca, of Argentine origin, who obtained 45.49% of the votes, according to the official count.
Fraga's running mates, Maureen Porras and Rafael Pineyro, also defeated their opponents; representatives of the political sector that founded the city in 2003.
The elected mayor appeared before the voters with a vision of change and progress for Doral; taking advantage of the resignation from the re-election of Juan Carlos Bermúdez, who gave up his position to the defeated Mariaca, who was his second during the previous term.
Fraga, with a degree in Business Administration from Miami-Dade Community College (MDCC), and a degree in Finance and Accounting from Florida International University (FIU), won the mayoralty with a program that prioritizes reducing traffic congestion, investing in infrastructure and work with the county to find solutions for a recycling plant.
The new councilors and councilors will take office in a municipal plenary session, which will be held on December 21.
