Cuban women aged 98 and 102 swear in as citizens of the United States

Two elderly Cuban women, one 102 years old and the other 98, recently swore an oath asUnited States citizens at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office in the city of Tampa, Florida.

"We had the honor of meeting two special people at our Tampa office recently. Maria, 102, and Aida, 98, both from Cuba, became#NewUSCitizens"USCIS indicated on Twitter this Wednesday.

The US Department of Homeland Security agency, which congratulated both citizens, added that the fact "proves that you are never too old to start a new chapter and become an American!"

Cases like those of María and Aida are not so uncommon.

In December 2022Ciriaca Entenza Cuéllar, a 111-year-old Cuban was sworn in as a US citizen. at the Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office in the city of Orlando, accompanied by her daughter and son-in-law.

In that case, the agency also shared on Twitter a photo of the elderly woman, sitting in a wheelchair and holding the United States flag in her hand.

"Congratulations to one of our newest senior citizens. Meeting a centenarian is always special and we wish her the best!" USCIS wrote at the time.

Cubans tend to be among the nationalities that add the most people as citizens of the United States.

According to data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) obtained byCyberCuba, a total of30,383 Cubans were sworn in as Americans in fiscal year 2020, which represented 4.9 percent of those naturalized in the country in that period.

During the last two decades, after the bilateral agreements between Washington and Havana in 1995, a total of798,899 Cubans established themselves as permanent residents in the United States, of which 472,186 obtained citizenship.
