According to official data, from the beginning of the year until the previous week, at least 26 forest fires had been reported in Holguín, with damage to a total area of 1,212.93 hectares.

This Sunday, more than 500 hectares were added to the area affected by the large forest fire that persists in the mountainous area of Pinares de Mayarí, in that eastern province, exceeding 1,700 hectares of vegetation devastated by the uncontrolled flames.

The wind and the multiplicity of fires complicate the extinguishing efforts, according to a report by Cuban Television that considered this Sunday to be the “most intense and complex” day of all those that have been taking place to contain and control the fire.

The concern of the authorities is that the fire will spread to the territory of Santiago de Cuba. After making progress in controlling the outbreaks in the Cuchuflí and Casimba areas, on Saturday the firefighters' actions were concentrated in the Jimbambay area.

Considerable economic losses and the destruction of 25- to 30-year-old trees of cubensis and casuarina pine species, as well as grasslands, are reported.

Fires have also been reported in other locations in the country in recent days.

This Sunday, a firedevastated several wooden and guano homes in the town of Playa Cunagua, municipality of Bolivia, in the province of Ciego de Ávila.

“A hard day, very painful for those of us who were there and were just crying out for help. A thousand thanks to everyone who in one way or another helped us control it, to those firefighters and to Juancito, our pipeman from Brisas Bolivia, who was always present supporting while reinforcements arrived from Morón and Primero de Enero," said Daimarys Fernández, affected by the Sinister.

Last Saturday, three fires of moderate magnitude broke out in mountainous areas of Pinar del Río.

Until this Sunday, forces from the Fire Department and forestry services, together with state entities, cooperatives and local residents, were working to put out the flames in the Romero area, in the popular council of Pilotos, belonging to the municipality of Consolación del Sur, where the Julito Díaz and Eliseo Caamaño agricultural production cooperatives are located.

According to the information, at least 70 hectares of forest areas have been affected.
