Andravenous fire unleashed this Saturday afternoon has leftmore than 20 homeless peoplein the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami.
A total of16 adults and six childrenhave lost everything after the accident that occurred on the second floor of a wooden house, on Southwest 13th Avenue and 6th Street, reduced their belongings to ashes, as revealed in a note fromNBC Miami.
Miami Fire Rescue revealed that they received a call just before 4:15 p.m. with reports of smoke coming from the property.
Lieutenant Pete Sánchez, of the Miami Fire Department, assured that it was quite difficult to put out the fire in a wooden structure.
The house is divided into several units, and it took firefighters three hours to put out the flames.
“First because the fire burns quite intensely, then we arrived at the scene and there was a lot of smoke coming from the second floor,” the officer toldTelemundo 51.
Alberto Reyes, one of the people who live inside the residence, said that the tenants who previously lived there had warned them of electrical problems and therefore he wonders if that could be the cause of the fire.
"You see in the news that it happens to other people, but when it happens to you, that's when you say, wow, it happened to me!" Reyes told the media.
Reyes was able to rescue four of his dogs. He says two are still missing and his dogs are like family. "It's not fair that two of them are missing now," he said.
Authorities stated that no one was injured.
In January, aFour-month-old boy and his great-grandmother diedin an apartment fire in southwest Miami-Dade.
A fire alarm activated near the 101500 block of West Circle Plaza in West Perrine caused firefighters to mobilize and when they arrived at the scene there was a fire in a home with several occupants trapped inside.
The following month, alarge fire at a waste-to-energy plant in Doral mobilized firefighters and Miami-Dade authorities.
The Miami-Dade Fire Department asked residents to stay inside their homes, with doors and windows closed and recirculating air in the homes.
