Esteban Lazo Hernandez, president of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP), spoke harshly to the deputies of the agri-food commission this Tuesday, from whom he demanded fewer programs, measures, studies, diagnoses and more results:an increase in production and more food for the people.
On a day where thefailure of the Food Sovereignty Law, approved a little over a year ago, the highest figure in the Cuban parliament did not hide his discomfort.
“The state company is not fulfilling its role. Everything you have explained there are the implementations... I have not heard about the results yet. Where are the results of all this? The strength is that what was agreed upon has been fulfilled,” said Lazo, visibly upset.
At another point in his speech, Lazo Hernández recalled thatThe country does not have money to import food and practically 100 percent of the family basket today is being imported. He referred to years before the pandemic when the production of rice, beans, pork and milk was visibly higher.
“Just six years ago we produced 400 thousand tons of rice here in Cuba, almost 50% of the basket. In 2017 we produced 200 thousand tons of pork in 2017; 600 million liters of milk... Now all of that is relying on imports, the country does not have money to import and today we have a serious situation... that the basket does not arrive or arrives broken in half," he said.
“We are already very tired of programs, measures, studies, diagnoses... and where is reality? Where is the solution to the problem?", he questioned.
"We are still discussing if it was implemented well, if it was not implemented well, if it was discussed well in the municipalities, if it was not discussed well...How long are we going to be in that situation?"concluded the president of the Cuban Parliament, dissatisfied with the poor results shown in the meeting.
“Neither an independent media nor an opposition media outlet said it, but Esteban Lazo, president of the National Assembly of People's Power”, the independent media noted on TwitterelToque.
Given the lack of results from the implementation of Law 148/2022 (Law on Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Security), Lazo insisted on the need to increase national food production and reduce imports, and to do so appealing to a revolution in agricultural production.
"We must go to the solution of the problems, that this translates into results, that allows us to find the cause of the difficulties," he stated at the work meeting at the Havana Convention Palace, before the Ordinary Period of Sessions of the Parliament in its 10th Legislature, which will meet from July 20 to 22.
Given a proposal by the deputies about the situation with the mango harvest in Havana, which was affected by factors such as lack of preparation, shortage of fuel, preservatives and packaging,The president of Parliament indicated that there is a lack of organization, foresight, demand and efficiency, and not only in this area.
"What is happening with mango could be what is happening with other foods like rice or avocado," he said, "there has to be more ideas, a more proactive attitude, we have to get out of the lament to look for solutions," he added. and specified that "there are places where results are achieved and they do not receive fertilizers, nor do they import, however, it is not possible for this to be replicated even within the same municipality."
"Yes we can is not a phrase, it is a way of facing problems"concluded the president of the Cuban Parliament, who insisted several times that the only way out of the current critical scenario is by producing more food.
