Neighbors of El Vedado, a Havana neighborhood that years ago was distinguished by the beauty of its buildings and its green areas, are stunned to see that someone took garbage from the street and turned it into a "work of art."

"Art... or plan tareco?", asked María Elena Chirolde Corral, a member of the group Facebook "THE VEDADO OF TODAY".

The photos, taken on 21st Street between 8th and 10th, allow us to see dissimilar objects, including toilet bowls, tires or an old bicycle, arranged in a way as if someone had tried to make an artistic installation.

The images have generated controversy. For some they are of "horror and mystery", others associate it with witchcraft, there are those who see it as a private garbage dump, while there are those who defend the author's initiative.

"The culture of scrap and the ugly. Emotional scrap translated into supposed street art," said an independent cultural manager.

"What they have done is very ugly, that's my opinion, there are those who will see it as art, there are so many stupid things that you can't see the entrance of the building behind it, which is very beautiful," criticized a Havana resident.

"I have been there and it seems like the work of a madman. I thought that it could be that some neighbor is not well and the others let him do it because they are fond of him," commented a woman.

"Revolutionary art. Sense of the historical moment, doing more with less. Making the slogans a reality... they can continue adding," said a Cuban from Miami ironically.

A parent questioned who gave the authorization to do that. "The flowerbeds are public or common areas that must be maintained with green and clean areas, they do not need anything else," he alleged.

"Bad taste surpasses the limits, demonstrating the lack of knowledge about art, about the urban planning rules of the city and about the respect that must exist between citizens. The sidewalks and flower beds are not there to satisfy frustrated artists, but for free traffic and safe of the people. This 'artist' should approach the Ministry of Culture and request information and support to create his own project in a place where it does not affect the aesthetics of the city," stressed another Internet user.

However, others point out that with his idea, the author displaces the garbage that his neighbors dump throughout the block.

A man stated that he is a friend of the author, that his name is William and that that street is his exhibition area, and he invited everyone to pass through the area and bring a camera.

"Thanks to these works, the real garbage dump at 21 and 8 does not reach 21 and 10 or 12. Why don't they criticize the work of community, hygiene and epidemiology, etc.?" questioned a mother.

A young woman who lives near the place and knows the man who does these works coincided with her, who affirms that thanks to him, the garbage dumps have not spread.

"Our lack of culture is so high that for some it is a garbage dump, but I don't know a foreigner who passes by and doesn't stop to take some photos. By the way, the NTV already went and interviewed the man on one occasion, and he is taken as art," he recalled.

The Residents of El Vedado have been denouncing the numerous garbage dumps for some time. that proliferate in that populous neighborhood of Havana, due to the crisis of communal services and the indiscipline of a large part of the population.

Recently, a resident showed the excessive accumulation of waste on 23rd and 20th streets, and recounted what the district delegate told him when giving him the complaints.

"He responded to me that he had several areas like this a few weeks ago, that the municipality has serious problems with collection by community members, that the FAR is supporting, but unfortunately they overlooked us. (...) In addition, they removed the container of trash that was always in that corner. It wasn't stolen. I know we're not the only ones. Will Communales have to be privatized?"Lamented Mario Muñoz on Facebook.

In addition to solid waste, the presence of sewage in the area also contributes to the deplorable panorama of El Vedado.

Last November, an engraver and illustrator shared several photos on the Facebook wall of the group "El Vedado de hoy" that showed the fetid and dirty water contaminating her neighborhood.

"You can walk all over Vedado without stopping seeing green and rotten water. You go out to any task, and you try not to step on all that... There are also piles of garbage on many corners.. Un disgusted", says Nara Miranda Lorigados on Facebook.
