HeGustavo Rizo Airport, in Baracoa, province of Guantánamo, is preparing to open its doors to the international market, after the Cuban authorities announced their intention to enable it for such purposes.
Managers of the “Antonio Maceo” International Airport of Santiago de Cuba are in charge of giving the go-ahead for operations at the Baracoa terminal to be completed.
Several images published on the Facebook profile of the Santiago airport show people gathered for what they have called training meetings.
According to the publication, “the directors of the UEB Santiago de Cuba Airport, specialists and selected workers (mechanics, traffic representatives, among others), together with the directors of other entities based at the airport, inspected the Gustavo Rizo Airport Unit, in Baracoa. ", with the objective of training staff, preparing, specifying and finalizing details so that this airport receives international flights with a group of qualified workers who provide quality service."
Gustavo Rizo Airport is located approximately two kilometers north of the city and has a runway and passenger terminal, which currently receives domestic flights, mainly from Havana.
Baracoa is one of the first towns founded in Cuba by the Spanish explorer Diego Velázquez. The city is 512 years old.
It was established in 1511 as the first capital and first bishopric of the island. Then it lost that status and the capital was moved first to Santiago de Cuba, and then to Havana, but the seaside town retained its status as the First City of Cuba.
Baracoa is a beautiful tourist attraction for travelers who seek a beautiful natural environment and the beauty of the most forested region of the Island, with an abundance of rugged coastlines, foliage, mountains and rivers.
In addition to the natural landscapes, Baracoa stands out for its history and traditions, so cultural tourism is also very well considered. The Taíno Indians (descendants of the Aruacas or Araucos) were the inhabitants par excellence of the place when Admiral Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492 on the same voyage of discovery.
The La Rusa and Castillito hotels stand out in Baracoa, among others, and a set of traditions, added to local productions of sweets such as the famous coconut and chocolate cones, two of the culinary symbols of the place.
