The Crocodiles of Matanzas became champions of the II Elite Cuban Baseball League by defeating the Artemis Hunters 12-5 in the sixth game of the playoff final, held at the Victoria de Girón stadium.
The Matanzas came from behind after the visiting team opened the scoring in the same first inning, when Dennis Laza hit a home run with two on bases (La Tejera and Dayán García), to make the score 3-0.
The reaction of the locals was immediate and in that same inning the Matanzas team tied at three, with Manduley and Samón indisputable, also taking advantage of two errors made by the Cazadores' defense.
The Artemiseños went up another in the third, reaching five runs, due to a walk by La Tejera, an indisputable hit by Dayán and an error by the Yumurino center fielder.
The Matanzas team scored two in the fourth to tie the challenge again at five scores. In the fifth inning, Samón hit a decisive home run off reliever Yunieski García.
In the remaining innings the Matanzas team widened the difference to secure the victory with a comfortable score of 12 to 5. The Yumurinos hit 13 hits compared to eight for the visitors.
The Hunters of Artemis made six errors on the field compared to only one of their rivals.
The right-hander Noelvis Entenza won, who three and a third, only allowed two hits and had three strikeouts.
The defeat was for Yunieski García and the point at stake saved went to the reinforcement from Pinar del Río, Frank Luis Medina.
The sports press has recognized Artemisa's effort "to arrive against all odds and be in a Cuban baseball final for the first time in its short history."
With a tentative date of January 27, the so-called Star Series will be held at the Yumurino Victoria de Girón stadium, according to the president of the Cuban Baseball Federation, Juan Reinaldo Pérez Pardo.
Four teams will participate in the event: Matanzas (league champion), a selection of the best players from the other teams and national squads from Venezuela and Mexico.
There will be a Little League exhibition game and there will be skills competitions, the highlight of which will be a home run derby.
The manager also announced that the call should be held in the second half of February Antillean Cup in Puerto Rico, of which there are still no details and which the people of Matanzas will attend as a reward for the title achieved.
