A young Cuban lineman, worker of the Base Business Unit (UEB) of the municipalityBoyeros, in Havana, died this Tuesday as a result of a work accident that he suffered while working to recover the electrical service in the capital following the strong storms over the weekend.
TheCuban Electrical Union on his social networks a note of condolences in which he identified the victim asLeonel Barroso Machin, although it did not specify the age of the deceased or other data related to the circumstances of the accident.
“After an operation that lasted almost four hours on the 24th as a result of a pole falling, today the 26th we were informed that lineman Leonel Barroso, a worker from the Boyeros municipality, one of the most affected by the storm, died”, lineman Francisco Acosta wrote on social networks in a message of condolences.
“Today the linemen of Pinar del Río offer our condolences to the family of lineman Leonel Barroso. All my affection and the pain of the Pinar linemen are with you. The memory of [Leonel Barroso] will continue to live on in those who were your coworkers, it will continue in their hearts,” Acosta added in a heartfelt publication.
In recent years, the death of several electrical workers has been reported due to accidents while on duty.
This same monthDaniel Vega de la Cruz, worker at the Matanzas Electrical Company, passed away, due to complications arising from an accident that occurred while working at the end of February at an electrical substation in said province.
In October of last year thelineman Edelin Ernesto Giro Torres, from the municipality of Santo Domingo, in Villa Clara, died after receiving an electric shock.
In November 2022José Ignacio Rodríguez Antúnez, young man from Camagüey 24 years old, died electrocuted in San Juan y Martínez, Pinar del Río, during the efforts to restore electrical service after the hit of Hurricane Ian.
A month before otherstwo workers from the Cuban Electrical Union also died after having an accident while repairing power lines damaged by the meteorological event in Havana.
Between January 2022 and June 2023, some 83 people died in Cuba due to work accidents, according to figures published by the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI).
