A Cuban mother died this Thursday in Santiago de Cuba from burns, according to numerous reports on social media.
The woman, 33 years old and identified as Isaira Despaigne, left three children orphaned, two of them young and one between 17 and 18 years old.
The deceased, who lived in Micro 3 in the Abel Santamaría neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba, would have died in the hospital from a heart attack while being treated for severe burns.
It is still not clear how the incident happened, although most of the versions circulated point to her husband as the one who burned her and that he would already be detained.
A person who works at the polyclinic where she was taken when the incident occurred says that she was telling her partner not to touch her but he set her on fire. Later, at the funeral, law enforcement took him into custody," Irma Broek, administrator of the Facebook group Reporting Crimes in Cuba, wrote on Facebook.
"What a way to play! Setting his wife on fire and now saying it was a game. Playing, he threw fuel at her and then playing, he threw the empty lighter and caught fire," wrote the journalist from Santiago, Yosmany Mayeta, referring to the alleged explanation that the deceased's partner would have given to the authorities.
"You didn't deserve this, my sister, you didn't. I have no words or strength, we will say goodbye to you as you deserve, as a warrior, a champion. Forbidden to Forget You. Rest in Peace my sister," wrote internet user Lescaille Kirenia on social media alongside an emotional video in memory of the deceased.
The last post that can be seen on Isaira Despaigne's Facebook profile was on May 12th, when she wrote a beautiful dedication to her mother.
Until the closing of this report, there are no further details about the death of Isaira Despaigne. Neither Cuban feminist platforms nor official sources have echoed the tragic event.
