The Cuban actor Alexis Díaz de Villegas, who passed away on June 24, 2022, due to cancer and is remembered for his performances, received a posthumous award at the Fine Arts Film Festival Made in the Dominican Republic.
Díaz de Villegas won the award for Best Leading Actor for his work in the film "Insular," directed by filmmaker Héctor Manuel Valdez, according to the website CubaActors.
This is Díaz de Villegas' latest performance in a Cuban feature film, a piece of work that the contest's jury decided to recognize. It is one of the few occasions when such an award has been posthumously granted in the Dominican Republic.
The movie "Insular," based on the short story "La Isla" by Luis Martín Gómez, premiered in 2023 during the International Film Festival of India in Goa.
Its director also received the award for Best Director, while the Cuban actresses Andrea Doimeadiós and Lía Chapman were awarded as Best Leading and Supporting Actress, respectively.
Remembered for his role in "Juan of the Dead," directed by Alejandro Brugués and winner of the Goya Award for Best Spanish Language Foreign Film in 2013, Díaz de Villegas was born in Cumanayagua, Cienfuegos, in 1966, and enjoyed great popularity among Cubans.
He had an incredible career in Cuban theater, but also succeeded in cinema, with titles such as "Kangamba," "Three Times Two," "The Horn of Plenty," and "Havana Blues."
