The Cuban government decreed official mourning this Tuesday for the death last Sunday in an air accident of the President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, whom the regime described as "a great friend and admirable politician."
The mourning period began at 06:00 a.m. this Tuesday and will conclude at 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, as reported by the Presidency of Cuba.
The official statement specified that while the official mourning is in effect, the Cuban flag will remain at half-mast in public buildings and military institutions.
"During his term as President of that country since 2021, he decisively contributed to the development and strengthening of the friendship and cooperation relations between both nations," the press release stated in reference to Ebrahim Raisi.
The statement added that "the Cuban people and government stand with Iran in this moment of sorrow and express their confidence that the Islamic Revolution will continue and will know how to recover from this regrettable event."
This Monday, Díaz-Canel has already expressed his condolences for the helicopter accident in which Raisi died alongside other Iranian politicians, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hosein Amir Abdolahian.
The Party, the Government, and the people of Cuba deeply regret the loss of a great friend, an admirable politician beloved by his people: the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi," stated Díaz-Canel yesterday.
Immediately, dozens of Cubans reacted with indignation to the publication and demanded that he not speak on behalf of them.
"An admirable politician who killed more than five thousand prisoners in the 80s and who led a country where women have no rights... those are the references of communist Cuba," a activist retorted.
Lis Cuesta did not take long to share Díaz-Canel's tweet and sent condolences to the wife, daughter of the deceased, and the people of Iran.
The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, died along with several other senior officials who were with him in the crashed helicopter, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Governor of East Azerbaijan Province, and the region's leading imam.
The Ayatollah regime is a close ally of the Castro dictatorship.
The Iranian president had traveled to Havana in June 2023 where he met with Díaz-Canel and Raúl Castro.
On that occasion, during the official reception ceremony, the Cuban leader emphasized the "unity among those of us who have been condemned for wanting to build societies different from the ones the Yankee paradigm wants to impose, and that's why we have been subjected to blockades, unjust, inhumane, and unjustified sanctions."
A few months later, in December of last year, Raisi welcomed Díaz-Canel in Tehran during the ruler's tour of Middle Eastern countries.
On that occasion, the Cuban ruler spoke about his intention to strengthen ties with the Islamic country and for it to become an important economic player to help Cuba overcome the crisis.
As part of the official delegation that accompanied Díaz-Canel on that trip was his wife, who was "delighted" to do tourism in Iran.
