The heavy rains that struck the Cuban capital this Thursday caused the collapse of a building in Old Havana, as reported on social media.
The Facebook page La Tijera reported that the building located at 417 Esperanza, between Carmen and Figuras streets, had been at risk of collapse for years.
"Fortunately, the neighbors had been evacuated earlier, but a van from the State Company of the Ministry of Transport, Transcargo, was damaged at the windshield and front," he noted.
He also stated that the neighbors and the driver called the firefighters, "but they said that until the municipal government authorities arrive on the scene and they receive the order, they cannot go to the site."
This Thursday, heavy rains were reported in the Cuban capital, resulting in severe flooding in several municipalities, including Old Havana and Central Havana.
"It is raining heavily in Old Havana," reported the internet user Emicenio Z Zaldívar on Facebook, who shared photos of the flooded streets taken by Cuban Ivón Valdés.
The images show cars and motorcycles submerged in water, while some reports indicated that certain streets would be impassable.
The Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) in Cuba warned this Thursday of the occurrence of showers, rain, and thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening across much of the national territory.
The daily report from the government entity states that "in the afternoon, it will become cloudy over much of the national territory, accompanied by some showers, rain, and thunderstorms, which will be more frequent in inland areas and along the northern coast of the central and western regions."
Indeed, the official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso echoed the report and informed on Facebook that “starting today, the likelihood of rain throughout the country has increased, according to Meteorology.”
"Typical of June, with thunderstorms included. Due to the heat, severe weather events cannot be ruled out. In central Cuba and parts of the east, today appears to be a day of significant activity, as shown by the satellite at this hour," he added.
