A young Cuban woman was labeled as "ridiculous" for speaking "as if she were American" on TikTok, a comment to which she responded in another video, going viral on the social network.
The user @maryannett did not remain silent in the face of the insult, expressing that "there is no worse enemy of a Cuban than another Cuban," referring to the negative comment she received from another compatriot about her accent.
The young woman explains that she has been living in the United States for seven years and, as a result, has learned to communicate in English to adapt to her daily environment. "They called me ridiculous for speaking as if I were American," she mentions in her defense. Additionally, she emphasizes that speaking English does not mean she has forgotten her mother tongue, Spanish, and stresses that she still perfectly masters both languages.
I have been living in the United States for seven years and had to learn the language in which I have to interact every day in this country. That doesn't mean I don't speak Spanish perfectly. And to the person who wrote this message: I hope you find peace of mind and learn English," Maryanet concluded.
Faced with these words, the young woman has received support from more Cubans, who have criticized those who criticize the progress of others. "There are people who are bothered by others prospering and evolving. They do not live and do not let live," "They criticize me for pronouncing well, I don't understand Cubans, honestly," or "They always criticize when you don't behave like them, ignore them," they commented alongside the video.
