With the aim of seeking optimal athletic form, the five Cuban boxers qualified for Paris 2024 traveled to France to establish a training base less than 40 days before the opening of the Olympic Games.
Headed by the current two-time champions under the five rings Julio César la Cruz, in the 92-kilogram division, and Arlen López (80), the group is completed with the world medalists Saidel Horta (57), Erislandy Álvarez (63.5), and Alejandro Claro (51).
According to JIT's digital page, the boxers are currently training in Tremblay-en-France municipality, but starting on July 5th, they will be part of an international camp in the town of Nancy.
Alberto Puig de la Barca, president of the Cuban Federation of the discipline, announced that they will compete in matches with representatives from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, India, Germany, England, Ireland, and Puerto Rico.
Undoubtedly, boxing represents one of the most important disciplines on the island in the face of the Olympic competition, which will take place from August 26th to July 11th.
In Tokyo 2020, the largest of the Antilles celebrated four crowns: those of La Cruz and López mentioned, and the victories of Roniel Iglesias and Andy Cruz, who were not part of the qualifying process. In the case of the latter, he currently competes in professional boxing.
The story goes that Cuba has a total of 41 gold medals, 19 silver, and 18 bronze in Olympic boxing. It is considered the flagship of the island's sports movement for good reason.
With the multi-award-winning wrestler Mijaín López as the bearer of the national flag, Cuba aspires to conquer five crowns in Paris 2024 and finish among the top 25 nations in the final standings table.
Three years ago in the Japanese capital, the Island finished in fourteenth place, with a total of seven gold medals, three silver medals, and five bronze medals.
