The government of Holguin has chosen two retired generals from the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) to serve as advisors in food production amid the current crisis.
"Édgar and Mariano, two generals who led the well-known Mambisa Division in Holguín, which helped overcome the most challenging moments during the years of the Special Period, will be the advisors for the strategy promoted by the highest authorities of the Party and Government in the province," said the official communicator Rafael Hernández Aguilera on Facebook.
These retirees will be responsible for "recovering the productive poles" in the mentioned eastern territory because the regime believes that their experiences and knowledge "will be of great use to provide the response that the people demand in these times."
Amid a food crisis and uncontrolled inflation, Joel Queipo Ruíz, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and First Secretary in Holguín, launched his strategy to improve food availability.
The appointment was made official on June 22nd, and the notes published on social media do not detail the last names of the "retired generals" who are taking on the task of promoting food production for Holguín.
In Cuba, basic products such as milk, bread, and eggs have become unaffordable luxuries for many families.
The reality is that the Cuban economy is in ruins. Rampant inflation has made basic food items unaffordable for most families. Queipo Ruíz's strategy, although well-intentioned, seems to be more of a palliative measure than a real solution to the country's structural problems.
The participation of generals can be seen as ancient methods in an attempt to handle the current crisis. However, the ongoing military influence in civilian affairs raises serious doubts about the effectiveness and true intention of these measures.
