On Monday afternoon, Héctor Eduardo Tamayo Burgos, a 17-year-old teenager who died as a result of a late-diagnosed brain infection, was buried in the city of Santiago de Cuba. He had been hospitalized for over three weeks.
An emotional video posted by the journalist Yosmany Mayeta showed the moment when the mortal remains of the child were carried in a white coffin from his home, where he was previously mourned by family and friends, to the hearse that took him to the cemetery.
The youngest, who was in eleventh grade, lived with his father in the Luis Dagnes neighborhood, in the Altamira People's Council, as his mother is in prison.
The teenager was admitted for over three weeks at the Southern Children's Hospital Dr. Antonio María Béguez César, better known as "La Colonia".
Tamayo Burgos had initially been admitted to a "Miscellaneous" ward at the hospital due to the lack of beds in the intensive care unit, until he was transferred to the intensive care unit, where he remained in a vegetative state, receiving oxygen and other life supports.
The family complained about the delayed diagnosis of a brain infection, which ultimately ended the young man's life.
Hundreds of Internet users have been shocked by the death of the child, who was known as "Tito" by his loved ones.
Kirenia Burgos, the young man's mother, obtained a special permit from the prison where she is confined to say goodbye to her son.
The unfortunate death of the teenager took place in the midst of a complex health situation in Santiago de Cuba, which is currently facing a complex epidemiological situation with the confirmation of the circulation of four viruses: dengue, influenza, Orupouche, and SARS-CoV-2, the latter being the cause of COVID-19, as warned by official sources last Wednesday.
