The TV presenter Frank Abel, one of the most well-known faces of Cuban television, broke down in tears during an interview in Miami when asked about his mother, who was sentenced in the island to 10 years of imprisonment for embezzlement.
"That was very bad because my family completely fell apart, completely, it was very unfair," the announcer confessed tearfully to the hosts of the podcast "Destino Tolk."
"She was given a 10-year prison sentence, my mom was 60," he said visibly shaken as he recalled that moment.
Fernan, one of the presenters, mentioned that someone referred to the topic in a harsh way, "said that your mom had been arrested, accused of being a swindler and a thief."
That has to be Alexander Otaola, a disgusting guy who said that outrage, poor thing. We are very humble. If I showed you pictures of my house right now, you would say 'damn Frank Abel.' We have what is called, now people are just getting a plasma TV, at that time what we had was one of those panda TVs that the Cuban government provided," he added.
"My mom is not a scammer, she is a person who made a mistake. In Cuba, embezzlement, which is what that crime is called, has a subjective part and another that is tangible. Nothing could ever be proven against her," said Frank Abel.
In January 2022, the announcer left an artistic tour and requested political asylum in the United States, stating that even a professional can go hungry in Cuba.
His decision to leave the island was mainly due to the difficult economic situation he was going through, but he had to do so by breaking a work commitment, which is why he publicly apologized.
In an interview with Julita Osendi, Frank Abel said that in more than 20 years dedicated to his career in Cuba, he was never able to own a house, and many times he did not even have enough to eat decently.
