The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a warning following the possibility that the now tropical storm Beryl could reorganize into a Category 2 hurricane before making landfall in Texas.
"Beryl is expected to become a hurricane before making landfall. Preparations should be completed quickly in Texas," the entity wrote on its account on the social media platform X.
Currently, Beryl has maximum sustained winds of 105 kilometers per hour and is located 314 kilometers southeast of Corpus Christi, according to the NHC update at 11:00 AM ET
Its forward speed decreased from 19 km/h to 16 km/h, and some of the outer bands are starting to reach the Texas coast in the form of brief heavy showers and thunderstorms.
Much of the Texas coast is under hurricane alert, and the cyclonic event is expected to make landfall early Monday. The hurricane warning stretches from Baffin Bay, south of Corpus Christi, to Sargent, south of Houston.
Texas authorities warned the public along the entire coast to prepare for potential flooding, heavy rain, and strong winds.
The state's lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, who is acting as governor while Greg Abbott is traveling in Taiwan, issued a preventive disaster declaration for 121 counties.
For its part, the White House said on Sunday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency had dispatched emergency equipment, search and rescue teams, bottled water, and other resources along the coast.
