The U.S. assures that it seeks to resume the humanitarian parole process "as soon as possible."

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it is working to restart "as soon as possible" the processing of applications for the CHNV humanitarian parole program, which benefits Cubans, Haitians, Venezuelans, and Nicaraguans with sponsors in the United States.

This announcement comes after the temporary pause of the issuance of advance travel authorizations as a precaution while a review of the sponsors' applications is conducted.

The DHS has emphasized that the process will resume with the appropriate safeguards, ensuring that all beneficiaries are thoroughly evaluated and reviewed before their arrival in the United States.

Two weeks ago, DHS argued that the humanitarian parole program would be suspended due to suspicions of fraud.

This initiative, implemented on January 5, 2023, has allowed more than 520,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to arrive legally in the U.S. on commercial flights, under the condition of meeting strict security checks and other eligibility criteria.

By the end of July 2024, 109,000 Cubans, 205,000 Haitians, 90,000 Nicaraguans, and 115,000 Venezuelans had arrived legally and had been granted parole under this process.

Cuban migrants particularly benefit, as they can apply for permanent residency under the Cuban Adjustment Act after one year and one day of entering the country with a parole.

Despite the temporary pause, the DHS has ensured that no concerning issues have been identified in the review and evaluation of the beneficiaries, and it is expected that the program will resume its normal course shortly.
