The Pediatric Hospital of Holguín "Octavio De la Concepción de la Pedraja" denied that there is a shortage of platelets in the Oncology ward of that institution.
The note published by the Holguín Pediatric Hospital arises from the case of a Cuban girl with cancer who urgently needs donations of blood type A+. This was reported on Facebook by the Cuban Idelisa Diasniurka Salcedo Verdecia.
Precisely, the note published by the Hospital begins by referencing the publication by Salcedo Verdecia.
"In the last 24 hours on social media, on the Facebook profile of 'Idelisa Diasniurka Salcedo Verdecia', the situation regarding the availability of blood donations for children at the 'Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja' Provincial Pediatric Hospital in Holguín has been published. Specifically, A+ donors are requested to extract platelets for little Emily Elianis Remón Silot, who is admitted to the 3G oncology hematology ward," they say.
Emily, three years old and from the province of Granma, has a possible diagnosis of Neuroblastoma.
"Admitted on February 14, 2024, to the Pediatric Surgery service, where the diagnosis was confirmed on March 6, 2024, and from that moment was transferred to the oncohematology room to begin treatment," they continue.
In addition, they claim to have interviewed the mother of the little girl, who "expressed her deep gratitude to the medical and nursing team that cares for her daughter."
They also state that the mother mentioned that there are two more patients in the ward with the same need for platelets, and that, with her consent, one of her donations was used for another patient on one occasion. "But at no time have the donations made in the name of her daughter been lost, nor has there been a halt in transfusions."
They summarized that Emily's health status is good and that "she has progressed favorably, she has been transfused with platelets several times without difficulty. There is assurance of the continuity of her treatment and platelets in case it is necessary to maintain her indication."
In her Facebook post, Salcedo Verdecia stated that the girl "is a little one who is fighting against cancer, she is undergoing chemotherapy and about three days ago she started having an eye hemorrhage due to the deterioration of her body."
He stated that they need to extract platelets for the little girl and there is not enough blood in the mentioned health center, hence the urgency and because "she started treatment but her platelets and leukocytes are unstable and frequently decrease."
Salcedo emphasized that "they donated and blood was lost, which is why the girl is still in very bad shape and now more is needed."
