On August 14, a thief identified as Arthur Nathaniel Booth, dressed in a helmet and dark blue clothing that gave him the appearance of a plumber, committed a robbery in an apartment building located at 905 Southwest 12th Street in Hialeah.
The criminal managed to sneak into the apartment of Víctor Martínez, a Cuban who quickly asked him what he was doing there and tried to throw him out of his house. The man claimed to be a plumber and told him that he was there to check the water faucet in the kitchen.
At that moment, Booth lunged at Martínez, snatched the gold chain the Cuban was wearing, and escaped.
The neighbors of the building tried to help the elderly man. In statements to America Tevé, one neighbor recounted that upon hearing the screams, she left her apartment and saw other residents of the building trying to catch the thief without success.
Shortly after, they called the police, who took fingerprints and received surveillance videos recorded by the doorbell cameras of some houses.
Thanks to the collected evidence, the authorities were able to identify Booth, who already had a criminal record, and arrested him a week later.
When he appeared in court, many recognized him, as Booth had gone viral in 2015, when Judge Mindy S. Glazer, who was judging him for a similar offense, recognized him as an old classmate and asked how it was possible that the quietest kid in the class ended up like this.
On that occasion, Booth was sentenced to 10 years of probation, of which he only served nine before reoffending.
In this new hearing, due to the recidivism and the seriousness of the offenses, the right to bail was denied, and he remains in prison awaiting trial.
The Cuban Víctor Martínez, who had dreamed since his arrival in the United States of having a gold chain like the one that was stolen from him, was particularly affected.
"I arrived from Cuba 14 years ago and bought that chain that cost me 1,500 dollars. I always wanted to have one, but I could never do it in Cuba," explained the Cuban in statements to the mentioned media.
The chain was pawned by Booth at a jewelry store in Miami, and although the authorities located it, Víctor still hasn't been able to retrieve it.
