A few hours after a mass traffic accident that left nine injured in Santiago de Cuba, another road incident was reported in the province this Wednesday when a passenger transport truck collided with a motorcycle on an avenue in the capital city.
In a note published on Facebook, the communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported that the collision occurred because the truck driver did not respect the red traffic light and stated that he was unaware if the motorcycle driver was injured.
"Another traffic accident occurred on Victoriano Garzón Avenue in Santiago de Cuba, when the red passenger transport truck ran the red light and collided with a motorcycle that was coming at that moment," Mayeta reported. "So far, the precise details of the incident and the health status of the motorcycle rider are unknown."
So far, there has been no update on the incident.
In the comments, internet users questioned the lack of precaution among drivers, who constantly violate traffic laws and put the lives of others and their own at risk. Some referred, with alarm, to the numerous accidents occurring in the eastern province.
Incidents involving motorcycles, and in particular the so-called motorinas - whose use has become widespread in the country - are noteworthy events.
Precisely the day before, a collision between one of those electric motorcycles and another gasoline-powered vehicle in the center of Santiago de Cuba resulted in injuries to the drivers of both vehicles, who were taken to a hospital.
Also this Tuesday, a young motorcyclist lost his life while driving on Fifth Avenue, Miramar, in Havana.
On Sunday morning, a teenager died instantly after being hit by a motorcycle in Santiago de Cuba. Kevin Quiala Suárez, 16 years old, was fatally struck after leaving a bar where he had been hanging out with friends.
Although official statistics recorded a 13% decrease in traffic accidents (543 fewer) in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2023, incidents on the country’s roads and streets continue unabated, and the frequency with which they occur and their serious consequences are concerning.
