Lis Cuesta, wife of Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel, has once again attracted attention on the social network X (formerly Twitter) by acknowledging the low salaries received by the personal security members of the leaders of the Communist Party of Cuba. "They give so much in exchange for so little," the first lady admitted in a retweet with a comment on the congratulations her husband published on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the creation of the Personal Security Directorate.
A phrase from Lis Cuesta also did not go unnoticed, acknowledging that bodyguards help "in all aspects of life." The First Lady did not clarify whether, in addition to ensuring her safety, they also take on domestic tasks outside of their duty.
The reaction from internet users did not take long. The user who goes by the name Aladina reproached the First Lady for the low salary that bodyguards receive and called for the release of a political prisoner from the 11-J. "You yourself have said it, you don't even pay those people well. #CUBA #CubaPaLaCalle!!!!!!!!!!!! Freedom for Lizandra Góngora, mother of 5 children, imprisoned in Islas de Pinos!! It's only missing that they put her in the Presidio Modelo!!!" she wrote.
Others were amazed that Díaz-Canel's wife has personal security despite not holding any position in the regime's organizational chart. The Twitter user "Abuelita tóxica" reproached this, alluding to the origin of Díaz-Canel's wife. "And you, who are someone of no importance, have personal security? How you've advanced, guajira."
Unlike Fidel and Raúl Castro, Díaz-Canel appears to be more surrounded by bodyguards, perhaps because the dictatorship is aware of the popular discontent his presence provokes. One must not forget the famous phrase "Díaz-Canel, singao," which became a protest anthem against the tyrant who holds hundreds of political prisoners in jails for peacefully protesting on July 11, 2021. Furthermore, under his leadership, the largest emigration of Cubans in history has occurred. In just the last two years, more than half a million have left for the United States, not to mention that under his mandate, there has been the greatest deterioration of basic public services on the Island.
A clear example of Díaz-Canel's weakness was shown by the regime when he appeared at the pro-Palestinian march held in Havana in November 2023, and the PCC leadership was completely surrounded by bodyguards.
Also in March of this year, Díaz-Canel boasted about being very well-liked in Santiago de Cuba, but he appeared there armed to the teeth with security personnel, who barely allowed him to greet naturally the pro-Castro supporters who approached to thank him for the hours of blackouts, the unpaved streets, or the empty stores.
The First Lady has been facing a week of unfortunate comments on social media. On the 3rd, she lamented the destruction in Gaza, and Twitter users quickly reminded her that the regime led by her husband has managed to destroy Cuba without bombs.
