A 21-year-old Cuban man was murdered on Friday in the town of San Germán, in the province of Holguín, in an event that has shocked his family and friends, but that has also fueled the debate about public safety in Cuba.
José Manuel Martínez was slashed at midnight on Friday to steal his bicycle and his cell phone, according to the Facebook profile "La Tijera."
The profile itself stated that the alleged murderers "are two criminals with a history of criminal records known as 'The Twins of Felicia,'" although it did not provide details on whether they have already been captured.
The murder of José has generated dismay among the residents of San Germán. A friend of the young man dedicated heartfelt words of farewell on Facebook, calling for justice for this death.
"My child, today the sky is happy, it has one more little angel, I don't know why this happened to you, if you were just a child starting to live your life now," wrote the user Aleidys Yaneya Cruz Romero.
"Neither your friends nor your family will forget you, we will always remember that happy and content José, I still can't believe it! I will always remember you, as you always playfully bothered me and said things with affection. My heart is shattered," he expressed in a text where he asked for the young man to shine with great light from heaven.
In the comments section of that post, there were several reactions of sadness due to the tragic event.
"It's not easy, so much pain for all of us who knew him, rest in peace my boy," said an internet user.
“Brother, you left us, but I know that God will have you in His kingdom. For me, you never left because you will be in my heart for all my life,” expressed another user.
"Words fail, the pain you leave is immense. Rest in peace my boy. Condolences to your family and friends. A strong hug to heaven," another person emphasized.
The impact of this crime has transcended San Germán and has once again placed the growth of violence in the country in public debate.
In the town of San Germán, a violent assault was recently reported that resulted in an hour of kidnapping of a local family.
The family was composed of three individuals: a woman, her husband, and a minor who is the woman's grandson.
The three individuals were gagged by the criminals for an hour, during which they took the opportunity to steal an MZ motorcycle, the lady's gold chain, her earrings, several appliances, and the food rations provided by the government.
In Holguín, the murder of a beloved physical education teacher was also news last week.
Gilberto Laffita, who lived in the Reparto Peralta of the capital city of Holguín, was murdered during an attempted robbery at his home.
Another truly shocking event with few precedents in Cuba occurred on the morning of August 24 when two women who were neighbors and their two children, both minors, one of whom was only four years old, were brutally murdered.
In light of the shock caused by the quadruple murder, the official press, which usually tends to ignore cases of murder and other serious crimes, had no choice but to speak out.
