The Cuban multi-Olympic champion Mijaín López, a living legend of Greco-Roman wrestling, appeared this Friday as one of the special guests at the 14th Varadero Gourmet International Festival, according to reports on social media.
The recognized gladiator, five-time king under the five rings, was seen enjoying the gastronomic event that has generated controversy amidst the severe food shortage faced by the Cuban people in one of the worst economic crises in their history.
User Vilma Rivera, close to the UEB Matanzas of the Frutas Selectas Company, made a post on the social network Facebook where the award-winning athlete is seen sharing with other attendees.
In recent hours, dozens of Cubans criticized Miguel Díaz-Canel for celebrating a food festival while many households have nothing to put on the table.
Regardless of that reality, the regime inaugurated the event on Wednesday featuring cooking, gastronomy, and cocktail competitions.
The Varadero Gourmet, held in the famous Matanzas resort, is dedicated to topics as distant from the everyday Cuban as haute cuisine, artistic cooking, or the knowledge of alternative cooking.
But for the island's government, it becomes a showcase to project an image of luxury and sophistication, completely alien to the harsh reality of its citizens.
