Neighbors from the Cerro municipality in Havana captured a suspected thief on Mariano Street, between Nueva and Pedro Pérez, and handed him over to the police.
Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta received statements from some witnesses. They indicate that the individual was caught in the act and the residents of the area managed to stop him before he could escape.
It has not been confirmed what this man attempted to steal or where he did it. The neighbors decided to tie up the suspect to prevent his escape.
The situation remained under control until, approximately one hour later, a police patrol arrived and proceeded to arrest the alleged thief.
The incident generated great excitement in the neighborhood, as the residents came together to prevent the man from escaping before the authorities arrived. So far, no further details about the robbery or the identity of the captured individual have been revealed.
In recent weeks, several cases have been reported in Cuba where citizens are organizing to stop thieves. The rise of crime on the island is increasing in all provinces, and police action is not effective enough.
The neighbors have chosen to intervene directly to stop the criminals, taking justice into their own hands due to the delay of the police.
This highlights a distrust in security institutions and the growing desperation in communities, which seek to protect themselves amid a wave of crime and lack of basic resources.
