The Argentine journalist and content creator Melina Moriatis (@melimoriatisfit) has once again ignited social media with a new viral video, this time showcasing the conditions of a gym in Cuba.
In the video, which already has over 4.2 million views, Melina can be seen walking around the gym, where the instructor tells her that the entry fee is 1,200 Cuban pesos (approximately 4 dollars) per day.
Additionally, the recording shows the precarious conditions of the changing rooms, which are even without light.
Without making any comment, the Argentine let the images speak for themselves. The weight machines, with obvious signs of wear, and the overall state of the place quickly caught the users' attention, who promptly reacted with an avalanche of comments that have surpassed 8,000 in less than 24 hours.
One of the most repeated comments has been about the cost of the gym. “4 dollars a day, very expensive,” commented one of the users, while another added: “In Spain, it costs €0.98 a day and with better facilities.” However, there were those who defended the Cuban reality. “That's how gyms are in Cuba, and the best athletes come from there,” highlighted a user, while another pointed out: “Even with the imperialism sanctions for more than 50 years, Cuba has high-level sports representation.”
The conversation also shifted to the political and economic context of the island: "120 dollars a month, not even in dreams"; "It's like going back 40 years to the past," they commented.
The video by Moriatis, who maintains a very active presence on social media with over 12 million likes accumulated on TikTok, has brought to the forefront not only the difficulties of accessing quality sports facilities in Cuba but also the impact of the economic and political situation on the daily lives of Cubans.
Between humor and criticism, users have continued to share their points of view: “That fan has been on since 1960,” one joked; “The best thing about the gym is the bag hanging 4 meters high,” said another, while a more serious comment pointed out: “It’s expensive for what it offers, but it reflects a country that continues to fight.”
The video is part of a series of content in which Moriatis, winner of the Martín Fierro 2024, showcases everyday realities of the places she visits.
A few days ago, it also generated controversy with a video where he shared his experience looking for medicine in Cuba, which sparked thousands of reactions and comments of support and criticism.
