A Cuban mother is seeking help to obtain an urgent humanitarian visa to travel to the United States and reunite with her daughter, who is in serious condition after suffering a traffic accident.
Melanie Rodríguez, 20 years old, is fighting between life and death in a hospital in Florida after a terrible accident that occurred on October 6 in Lehigh Acres, in Lee County, in which four people died.
"Yanelys González Mendoza is asking for humanitarian aid to be able to be with her daughter, who is alone in that country, only with a friend, and the doctors are not providing much information. Please, anyone who can help me share," requested Yéssica Corrales, cousin of Melanie, on Facebook.
According to the Facebook page La Tijera, Melany is hospitalized in critical condition at the Gulf Coast Medical Center.
"She is alone, although a good Samaritan is handling communication with her mom, in addition to keeping an eye on her situation in the hospital," he detailed.
"Yanelys González asks for prayers for her little girl, while she turns to the community of Cubans living in the U.S. to help her obtain a humanitarian visa so she can be with her during this difficult time," she added.
Yanelys lives in the Mantilla neighborhood of the Arroyo Naranjo municipality, Havana.
In the traffic accident last Sunday, four more young people lost their lives.
Two of them were identified as Reysis Hernández and Mel Viera, originally from Bejucal, Mayabeque. Their families are asking for help for the funerals and have started a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to cover the costs of the funeral services.
The accident occurred while they were traveling in a sedan heading west on Lee Boulevard, east of Lee Street.
The driver, a 23-year-old man living in Cape Coral, lost control of the vehicle on a curve, jumped over the road divider, and entered the eastbound lanes, where he collided head-on with another car. The driver and three of his passengers, including Reysis Hernández and Mel Viera, died at the scene.
According to the post from La Tijera, the driver of the second car, 53 years old, and a 36-year-old passenger sustained serious injuries and were also taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center.
The impact caused this second car to collide with the front left side of a third vehicle.
