Animal protectors in Havana reported on social media about the danger facing a dog after its owner, an elderly woman living in Marianao, was moved to a nursing home.
Mafalda Hernández reported in the Facebook group "SOS Callejeros. Cuba" that the animal was left alone on the porch of a house, where a neighbor named Bertha provides it with some food.
Hernández emphasized that the situation has become concerning due to comments from some neighbors who have suggested ending the dog's life to "get rid of it."
"Whoever can rescue and welcome him, please call the neighbor Bertha at 72625842," the protector stated in their post.
Marytee Ricci, another animal rights advocate, stated on Facebook that "they want to get rid of the dog from Marianao to clean the house; they have already managed to get him to come out to eat."
Reports of abandoned animals for various reasons are becoming increasingly common.
Recently, a Cuban woman urgently sought help for a puppy in Havana that was left abandoned after its owners sold their house.
Gilda Arencibia shared a photo of the animal on her Facebook wall, which was abandoned in a house that was sold, and the new owners do not want it.
In June, a little dog that had been abandoned by its owners before they emigrated spent the day standing at the door of what used to be his home in Havana.
The organization Cubans in Defense of Animals (CEDA) urged Cubans to reflect on the responsibility of having a pet, as these "sentient beings" suffer greatly when abandoned.
