Amid one of the worst economic crises that Cuba has experienced in recent decades, the “Mariana Grajales” Maternal Hospital in Villa Clara achieved its second triplet birth this year, successfully delivered until last Tuesday, October 8.
The official newspaper Vanguardia reported that the lucky parents were Education worker Yunia Pérez Ruiz and private sector worker Ridel Freijo Angeri.
Residents in the municipality of Remedios, infertility treatments began in that locality before being transferred to the provincial level.
"I underwent several exams and prescribed medications until I became pregnant," clarified the first-time mother.
The entire process was interrupted by the COVID-19 stage that paralyzed many services on the island, but by the time they resumed treatment, "it was a bit surprising, and from the first ultrasound, there were three little sacs. A moment of joy and at the same time difficult to hear Heiber, the radiologist from my area, tell me: 'Not one is coming, there are three,'" recounts the 32-year-old woman.
The mother recalled that she was admitted to the Special Care Unit of the Villa Clara hospital on August 12. "Here, the stay was longer; however, my gratitude extends to the Neonatology team and to those in the hospital who have been involved in my case, followed by experts in Assisted Reproduction in the province. Everyone is to be credited for the success, including the specialists from my municipality," she said.
The doctors who performed the cesarean section in which Rubí, Jade, and Marit Freijo Pérez came into the world agreed in describing the procedure, which lasted between 40 to 45 minutes, as a challenge for the institution that was resolved with collective effort.
The three babies, for their part, are evolving favorably. Rubí, Jade, and Marit continue to gain weight, which is admirable for their contexts: 4.2, 4.0, and 4.6 pounds, respectively.
Since 2020, the "Mariana Grajales" Hospital had not received any triplets. On that occasion, Dayana Sifontes Linates gave birth to three sons, named Ángel Daniel, Joel Davis, and Danis Joel.
However, in August of this year, they welcomed Alicia, José Miguel, and José Antonio Álvarez Fleites, who are the result of the marriage of Dr. Aracelys Fleites León, a specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics, and her husband Yosami Álvarez Mora, an agricultural worker, blessed after 15 years of attempts and infertility treatments.
