Cuban denounces negligence at a hospital in Havana: They let my mother die in observation.

A young Cuban seeks justice for the death of his mother after what he considers serious medical negligence at the Miguel Enríquez Surgical Teaching Hospital, known as La Benéfica, in Havana.

According to Yasmanis' account on the social network Facebook, her mother was transferred from a polyclinic in Guanabacoa to that center last Wednesday night, where she was left under observation. However, until 5:30 a.m. she was not attended to by any doctor or nurse.

"The only thing I ask for is justice," he expressed, as he was in Isla de la Juventud and from the very beginning tried to get a ticket to return to the capital and help his mother.

In that process, a neighbor of his called him desperately to inform him that his mother had died alone in the observation room, which is why he tried to speak with the doctor over the phone, but he refused to talk to him.

The situation worsened when Yasmani finally arrived in Havana. He reported that he couldn’t see her until the forensic medicine car arrived at night: “I was able to see her on a bare iron stretcher without sheets or anything,” he detailed.

He also added that his mother has been dead for 38 hours waiting to be cremated. "They want money to process my mom because they say there are no vehicles," he mentioned regarding the process at the funeral home in Guanabacoa.

Yasmanis's words not only reflect a son's pain but also a denunciation of the shortcomings in the Cuban health and funeral system, which in this case, according to him, have caused a chain of negligence with fatal consequences.

A Cuban woman, mother of two children, who showed symptoms of dengue, died this week in Havana after not receiving adequate medical attention, according to a source close to the deceased.

"I write with arguments that she was taken twice by neighbors to the nearest polyclinic, still vomiting blood, with a fever, not having eaten, and with severe headaches. They send her back home because they tell her there are no medications," wrote the user Raysa Juan Delgado on Facebook.

In August, the Provincial Health Directorate of Holguín denied the accusations of medical negligence related to the death of a 20-day-old baby, stating that the infant died from "complications acquired in the community," where he was given marjoram tea.

The statement responds to the complaint made by the child's mother, Arlety González, who told the independent media outlet CubaNet that her son died due to medical negligence at the Maternal and Child Hospital of Banes and later at the Provincial Pediatric Hospital.
