The Civil Defense of Cuba has issued an alert for the provinces of Guantánamo and Holguín due to the high probability of heavy rains and possible flooding in the region.
This situation is caused by a trough over the eastern area, a tropical wave in the central Caribbean Sea, and high humidity levels. In combination with the saturation of the soil due to recent rains, these factors have already caused flooding in the municipalities of Baracoa (Guantánamo) and Moa (Holguín).
The authorities have activated the Municipal Defense Council in Moa to facilitate the evacuation of residents in vulnerable areas and have asked the population to stay informed about updates from the Meteorological Institute and Civil Defense.
The situation in the region is critical, with reports of flooding in Baracoa and Cabacú, where the Miel River and other waterways have overflowed, affecting homes and roads. Additionally, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero has urged residents to follow evacuation instructions and seek safe shelter.
According to the local media Primada Visión, 128.8 mm of rain accumulated in just six hours, worsening the situation in communities such as La Playa and El Matadero. The continuous power outages have hindered residents' access to news and information via radio and television, adding an additional challenge for affected families.
The Civil Defense and the institutes of Meteorology and Hydraulic Resources maintain strict surveillance over the situation and recommend that residents follow official instructions and comply with safety measures to reduce the risk of loss of life and greater damages.
