A driver of Cuban origin discovered a box and a bag of ballots discarded near the intersection of the Turnpike highway and 211th Street in the city of Cutler Bay, south of Miami.
A video shared on the Instagram account Only in Dade shows the moment when a Cuban stops his vehicle and appears utterly astonished by what he sees.
The images show how the driver stops, picks up the sealed plastic container marked with electoral tape and barcodes, along with a blue bag for ballots.
"That's sealed, look at that... This is crazy," comments the Cuban while loading the materials into his vehicle to deliver them to a Miami-Dade police station.
Minutes later, officials from the Department of Elections arrived to take the ballot box and the bag.
A human error with consequences
Christina White, the county election supervisor, explained in statements collected by the Efe agency that the incident was the result of "human error," as an employee forgot to close the back of the truck, which caused the containers to fall while traveling on the highway.
White confirmed that the electoral team verified that the seals were intact and that the ballots—already scanned and tabulated—suffered no damage or alterations.
"Fortunately, this was observed in real-time by honest citizens who did the right thing and handed over the container and the bag to the police department," White added.
However, he pointed out that the department maintains a policy of "zero tolerance" for these errors, which is why the employee was immediately terminated.
Massive participation in the Florida elections
The incident occurs against a backdrop of high electoral participation in Florida, where more than 4.5 million people have already exercised their right to vote, according to the latest data from the state's Division of Elections.
So far, 2,090,681 mail-in ballots have been cast, and 2,508,243 votes have been submitted at early voting centers.
Of these voters, 2,066,479 are Republicans; 1,565,445 are Democrats, and 868,941 are unaffiliated, while 98,059 belong to minor parties.
