Amid a deep systemic crisis, the Cuban government has authorized the entry of Russian livestock products into the country, a measure that will enable companies from the Eurasian nation to export beef, pork, poultry, and dairy products to the island's market.
According to the news outlet Interfax, Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosseljoznadzor) received approval following an audit of the country's food control system conducted by Cuba's National Center for Animal Health.
In this way, the Cuban authorities validated the Russian control systems, and thanks to this approval, the companies registered on the veterinary platform "VetIS" and its component "Cerber" will be able to operate without trade restrictions.
A step that has been considerably delayed, as the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture extended accreditation to 14 Russian companies in June 2023 that passed the initial inspections conducted with the support of Rosseljoznadzor.
Two months later, nine other companies also received certification from the National Center for Agro-Food Health of Cuba (CENSA) for the export of their products.
This collaboration signifies a strengthening of commercial relations between Russia and Cuba, part of the island's efforts to reactivate its economy and attract foreign investments, especially following the initiatives prompted by the protests of July 2021.
