Hurricane Rafael makes landfall in Artemisa with destructive force

The atmospheric phenomenon made landfall at Playa Majana at 4:20 PM, approximately 75 km south-southwest of Havana.


Hurricane Rafael made landfall on Wednesday afternoon in the province of Artemisa, on the southern coast of western Cuba, with destructive force rated at category 3 and sustained maximum winds reaching 185 km/h (115 mph).

According to the island's Meteorology Institute on the social media platform X, the atmospheric phenomenon made landfall at Playa Majana at 4:20 PM, approximately 75 km south-southwest of Havana.

The meteor is expected to cause a dangerous storm surge, capable of generating flooding and hurricane-force winds that will put lives and property at risk, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The NHC issued a hurricane warning for the Cuban provinces of Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Havana, Mayabeque, Matanzas, and the Isle of Youth.

A tropical storm warning was also issued for Villa Clara and Cienfuegos, as well as for the Florida Keys, from Key West to the western side of Channel 5 Bridge.
