El Vedado, in Havana, has been left devastated after the passage of Hurricane Rafael, which this week caused significant damage in the Cuban capital.
The wind gusts, which exceeded 150 kilometers per hour, uprooted trees and tore roofs and aluminum sheets from homes and buildings.
The streets were blocked by debris and fallen branches, while the façades of several iconic buildings show evident damage.
The impact on the infrastructure has also been severe, with downed power poles and collapsed drainage systems causing flooding and hindering recovery efforts.
These damages are compounded by the electrical crisis facing Cuba, which has worsened after the hurricane. Residents of Nuevo Vedado and El Vedado have taken to the streets to protest against the prolonged blackouts.
Many have gone up to 60 hours without electricity, leading to protests and spontaneous demonstrations demanding immediate solutions.
Authorities have acknowledged that repairs to the electrical system could take time due to extensive damage, which heightens the frustration of residents in Havana, who are already facing a prolonged energy crisis.
